MDJ Creations - Interviews with Indie Nail Polish Creators

Interviews with Indie Nail Polish Creators - #9

Hey guys! I hope you're doing well! I really am exciting to be interviewing indie polish creators. We've seen so many new nail trends because of them & I can't wait too see what they have in store for us next! Since indie polishes are very popular right now I figured there's probably a lot of customers/fans who would love to get to know the person behind all their favourite creations. So that's what I'm going to be trying to help you do!

Questions are BOLD & the creators response will be in the regular font.

Please tell me a bit yourself. (What's you're name? Are you a Cat or dog person?  Etc)
Please tell me a bit yourself. (What's you're name? Are you a Cat or dog person?  Etc)
The most defining thing about me is my faith in Jesus! In him I have found true peace and joy and a source to draw on for everything I need in life! I always have hope bc of how faithful God is.  I love our church community, I feel like I'm surrounded by a bunch of winners, people who trust God, serve &love Him faithfully, and are extremely blessed because of it! My life is filled with abundant blessing, and when bad days come, joy and hope are always available to me b/c they are based on a never failing love of the Father,  not on others or circumstances which fail! He has made me a strong daughter, wife & mother. My husband is a huge support in all I do. My business wouldn't be the same without his help! I also love to cook and be outside w/my kids engaging & loving on our neighbors. I love the wind, exercising, homemade popcorn & movie night!

What is your nail polish brand & how did you come up with the name?
MDJ Creations stands for Melissa Demster Jewelry Creations because my business started out with making jewelry and has branched into many other handmade things since then. Namely polish, ointment & lip balm.

What year did you start your brand & what motivated you?
I've been a business owner for 12 years, started in 2005, but my polish line is going on 7 years, it started in the fall of 2010! ( I need to double check that, I may be off by 1 year... recently we celebrated the five-year anniversary).

Do you remember the name of the first polish you made &/or sold?
I remember every polish I've ever made! And I remember exactly what goes in it! But I don't think I remember the exact first one, I remember several that were there in the beginning, lol!

When creating a new polish, what's your inspiration process?
Sometimes I will have vision beforehand other times it comes to me as I work. One of the most fun parts is coming up with a name that really resonates with what's going on in my spirit and my life around me. There's a lot in a name! Sometimes I keep it light and fun or let others choose the name as well. Naming polish for me is a big deal. It's so defining to the creation!  Like the spoken for collection, "Whisper", "Spoken", "Echo" & "Silence" had me thinking all poetically

What is your all time favourite polish that you created?
I honestly don't know that I have one favorite all time. I get a lot of enjoyment out of dedicating polish to others, so my favorites are probably those that I have been able to bless others with first-hand..
I've made polish for friends weddings, baby showers and for supporting causes dear to my heart with fundraiser/ charity polish, those are the most rewarding! That's probably my favorite kind of Polish! But if I had to name a current favorite color, then Mysterious Ways, my favorite pink with shimmer & I'm wearing it now about to share pics, lol!

What are your 3 top sellers of all times?
My multichrome holos (Intelligent Design, Earth's Ember,  Double Rainbow, etc), my flakie crellies & my nail tape, lol!

From your personal experience what are some pros & cons to being a indie polish creator?
Pros-  I love people and so the interaction and the community are super fun; I love color, sparkle and simmer, so making pretty polishes super fun too!

Cons-  Just speaking for myself, the cons are my limitations. If I could, I would spend way more time on polish and my business! But I am a homeschooling mother of 3, expecting baby #4 in August 2017, so  have learned to accept during this season of life that I can't do as much as I would like to in my business! But it is worth it to enjoy & pour into my family right now!

Where is your brand based? Do you ship internationally?
Texas, yes,  always have!

What's your favourite mainstream brand?
I think China glaze. A nice balance of color choices and fair prices with pretty good formulas. Sally Hansen is good for the money too!

What's your favourite indie brand?
I don't have a favorite indie but several that I admire.

Is there anything else you'd like my readers to know?
I would simple like to thank you and your readers for this interview and a chance to share my thoughts and answers! I really appreciate it and I hope I can continue to bless you all in what I am doing as an Indie brand! If anything I said about Hope Joy and Peace in my relationship with the Lord picture interest, feel free to contact me and I can share more!
