Drinks with Demeter

Press Samples

Hey guys! I have a fun new series that I'll be working on soon. I've been working with Demeter for pretty much since the beginning of my blog, & I appreciate that they've been with me for such a long time so it's only right to celebrate almost 3 years working together. So let's jump right into the details & drinks!
Drinks with Demeter
So here's the plan, I haven't really tried any "fancy" drinks, when I do drink I mainly drink wine. So I'll be going out & ordering one of the following scents in drink form & trying it out & giving my honest opinion about how similar or identical they are. I'm extremely excited so here's the list of fragrances/drinks that'll be included in this series.

Below I will include the tidbit that's on the Demeter website, about each scent.
Demeter - Between The Sheets
Demeter - Between The Sheets
Between The Sheets
An exotic and alluring blend of mango, guava, passion fruit, orange liquor, lemon juice and rum, irresistible to anyone who experiences it. The Between the Sheets Cocktail was born during Prohibition in the 1920's. A speakeasy was the only place to get a decent drink, and no respectable Flapper would be seen without her flask neatly tied to her leg. Most cocktails only masked the taste of inferior booze, so fruit juices became the standard mixers for just this purpose

Demeter - Cosmopolitan Cocktail
Demeter - Cosmopolitan Cocktail
Cosmopolitan Cocktail
We love a good cocktail........ True to the legendary Cosmo, this fragrance is an inviting and refreshing combination of Vodka, Cranberry Juice, a hint of Lime Juice and a touch of Cointreau. Maybe it will evoke memories of a sunset on the pier in sandals, or maybe an elegant black tie affair. Our own favorite is the lobby bar at the Mission Inn in Sonoma, California, right after we check in, before even going to the room. Regardless of the time, place or person Demeter's Cosmopolitan Cocktail evokes for you, rest assured, you will feel and smell wonderful! No one seems to have bothered recording who mixed the first Cosmo, though many drink historians and bartenders agree that the gay community in Provincetown, Massachusetts, should be credited with the accomplishment. Occasionally, the name Cheryl Cook will surface, but it leads only to San Francisco, never to an actual person. Many bartenders - such as John Caine, owner of San Francisco's Cafe Mars and undisputed West Coast champion of this drink - partly credit the Cosmopolitan with the resurgence of the cocktail during the '70s. The popularity of the Cosmopolitan quickly traveled from New England to New York and then across the country. Imbibers like MacGyver drink it, and Hunter S. Thompson - the self-proclaimed "mad doctor of gonzo journalism" - managed to get it cited in an affidavit used in The People of the State of Colorado v. Hunter Stockton Thompson

Demeter - Fuzzy Navel
Demeter - Fuzzy Navel
Fuzzy Navel
The smoothest fuzzy navel you'll ever experience, Demeter's Fuzzy Navel cocktail is a fresh and fruity combination of peach schnapps, vodka and orange juice. In the mid-1980's, the Fuzzy Navel became something of a cult drink in the Midwest, and a rallying point for young drinkers. This struck us as a phenomenon just old enough to be slightly nostalgic, and thus the perfect platform for Demeter's continuation of its long line of successful cocktail-based fragrances.

Demeter - Gin & Tonic
Demeter - Gin & Tonic
Gin & Tonic
The cocktail. End of the day slight intoxication: strong, sweet with a sweet-deep juniper finish and citrus twist. A light, crisp fragrance that is right just about any time and anywhere. Our Gin & Tonic is essential refreshment from heat, tropical or otherwise. In the 12th century, records reveal the distillation of the predecessor of what we call gin was practiced for medical purposes at Salerno Medical School. By the late 1680's Dutch exports of gin exceeded 10 million gallons a year. By the 1720's "Gin Madness" spread through London as an escape from the brutal life of the nascent working class. Dram shops advertise, "Drunk for a penny, dead drunk for two pence and a straw for nothing". In 1750 Londoners consumed 11 million gallons of gin per year. The tide turns in 1751 when the Tippling Act was passed by Parliament - the beginning of the end of "Gin Madness". The act eliminated small gin shops and left the distribution of gin to larger distillers and retailers. Within a few years consumption was down to 2 million gallons per year and the quality of gin improved. Gin's position in Britain moves up as it grows drier and more refined, and Gin is on its way to becoming a gentleman's drink.

Demeter - Malaga Cooler
Demeter - Malaga Cooler
Malaga Cooler
This was inspired by a terrific film from early 70s with Elaine May called A New Leaf. May's character, a wealthy wacky botanist says to a wine connoisseur: "Have you ever had Extra Heavy Malaga Wine and Lime Juice? It's called a Malaga Cooler and every year is good." Well, we couldn't resist creating this one. So, here it is, and it is very, very pleasant too, the sweet wine balanced by the citrus of the lime juice.

Demeter - Martini
Demeter - Martini
Martini
The Martini - No other cocktail has attained quite the mystique, especially since its genesis is lost in mists of time. And simply sipping a well-crafted Martini confers all that mystique on you. There is even a certain Martini culture: books, bars, and a whole swinging ethos. We always believe in the Gin Martini. And we've heard that it was just a marketing ploy by Vodka makers that appeared to indicate that a Martini could just as easily be made with Vodka instead of gin.

If you're the type that likes a good Martini, experiment with several different brands of gin, different ratios of dry and/or sweet vermouth, and a few dashes of Bitters, you might earn a new appreciation for some of the complexities that can accompany "a simple blend of Gin and Vermouth". And that is exactly the fragrance notes you will find in Demeter's martini-"a simple blend of Gin and Vermouth”- and a hint of olive.

Demeter - Pina Colada
Demeter - Pina Colada
Pina Colada
In 1950's Puerto Rico, Don Ramon Lopez-Irazzy developed a delicious homogenized cream made from coconut. The product became know as Coco Lopez and was used for tropical dishes and desserts. In 1957, Ramon Marrero, a bartender at Puerto Rico's Caribe Hilton, combined coconut cream with rum, pineapple juice and ice in a blender to create this famous drink. Victor Bergon, of Trader Vic's borrowed Marrero's recipe and called it the Bahia. To make a great PiƱa Colada, the trick is to use both light and dark rum, a dash of bitters and a little double cream. Demeter's Pina Colada is a luscious mixture of Cream of Coconut, Fresh Pineapple and Light Rum, blended to a perfect sweetness and richness

Demeter - Sex On The Beach
Demeter - Sex On The Beach
Sex On The Beach
Demeter Fragrance Library presents the wearable version of the Sex on the Beach Cocktail, a sensory sensation; an inviting and refreshing combination of Vodka, unsweetened Pineapple Juice, a touch of Raspberry liquor, a hint of Melon liquor and a splash of Cranberry. This particular fragrance was inspired by the 19 year-old daughter of one of the principals, who thought Demeter needed a cocktail-related fragrance that was more fun and less serious; which made us feel very old and caused the development and release of this fragrance in record time. Rules for Sex on the Beach 1. Choose a position and stick to it. Switching results in bodies coated in sand. 2. Use a towel or blanket. Sand in your bathing suit is both uncomfortable. 3. Warning: that stretch of sand is less secluded than you think. Thrilling to some, consider the cautionary tale of Jim Santoro, 33, of Arizona and Judith Reichel, 24, of Cleveland. As reported by the Cleveland Plain Dealer on June 28, 2002, the amorous couple pled guilty to Public Indecency in Plainville Municipal Court for having oral sex on an Ohio lake front beach. The couple explained that they were drunk (from too many Sex on the Beach cocktails, no doubt), but the judge was less than sympathetic. The sentence: Advertisements in two local papers expressing their personal apologies to the local community.

Demeter - White Sangria
Demeter - White Sangria
White Sangria
Let the party begin! Traditional Sangria is a Spanish blend of red wine, fruits, brandy, and often a sweetener, like honey, and sometimes other spices. The Demeter version is Sangria Blanco, made with dry white wine. It is fruity, but also clean and crisp. Refined, sophisticated and perfect for the summer heat.
